ESOL for Construction
Module facts:
An online self-study module for non-native English speakers who wish to improve their communication skills in the field of construction.
All four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) are practiced through practical scenarios and activities. In addition, there are grammar and vocabulary sections.
This module consists of three parts, at the end of part 3, learners are required to complete a Test (online).
The module can be taken separately or added to a general ESOL course (Beginner/Elementary/Intermediate level)
Each learner will be allocated a tutor who will provide feedback and support during this short course. Method of communication with the tutor is via the learning platform.
Access to the learning platform is available 24 hours a day /7 days a week.
The learning materials: Audios, videos, PDFs, Word doc, Online quizzes, Interactive activities (see sample materials)
This module is suitable for construction workers in non-managerial roles, e.g. labourers, brick-layers, machine operators, electricians, plumbers, etc.

Learning Objectives:
- to learn essential vocabulary and expressions used at construction sites
- practice reading with understanding (signs and notices)
- gain an overview of different sectors and jobs in the construction industry
- to use adjectives for describing materials, places and people in the workplace
- to be able to recognise machinery on the site
- to use instruction words in short sentences and understand short instruction texts
- Health & Safety awareness (accidents, workplace hazards, responsibilities and training)
- demonstrate an understanding of H&S rules for non-managerial roles
- to develop a working knowledge of the English grammar (Entry level 2/A2 level)
Assessment and Award:
There is one tutor-marked assessment in this course.

Requirements:
Learners must:
1. have access to a desktop computer/laptop/tablet and fast internet connection in order to complete this course. System requirements: Windows 7, 8, 10, 11. Browsers: Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari.
2. be IT literate, i.e. access, browse and navigate through the learning platform, open and send pdf files, play audios/videos, use email etc.
3. be 16+ years of age.
4. commit to a learning/assessment schedule in order to complete the course successfully. Estimated study time per week is around 2-3 hours. Note that this is only an estimation, the actual study time will depend on the individual.
This course is suitable for candidates with little knowledge of the English language (current A1 Users/CEFR) who wish to develop their language skills: you can read and write basic instructions, have an English vocabulary of at least 100 words.
!Please, note that this course is not suitable for absolute beginners (no knowledge of the English language). Suggestion 1:1 tuition.
